MEMS Accelerometers for Reliable Geotechnical Monitoring

accelerometer mems

Tunnel construction crews need to know if vibrations are exceeding safe limits. A sensor fails, data goes dark, and work stops. That’s a costly delay. MEMS accelerometers have changed how we collect this data—small, solid-state, and built for tough environments. At Kingmach, we’ve worked with geotechnical engineers for over a decade, integrating MEMS accelerometers into monitoring systems that track tilt, vibration, and seismic activity. Our units are used in tunnels, dams, and deep excavations worldwide. What sets ours apart isn’t just the sensor tech; it’s the field-ready packaging, easy integration with existing loggers, and the option to customize cable lengths or mounting brackets for your site. Whether you’re monitoring a sensitive heritage structure or a deep mine, a sensor that fits your exact setup saves time and reduces errors. And if something needs tweaking, our engineering team is directly accessible—not hidden behind layers of sales reps.

Technical Detail

Configured around process stability, mold life, and long-term uptime.

The accelerometer core uses a micromachined capacitive MEMS element. It responds to acceleration with a change in capacitance, which we condition to a stable analog voltage or digital output. This design gives high linearity and a noise floor low enough for seismic monitoring. Our standard ranges span ±2g to ±200g—covering everything from subtle structural tilts to blast-induced vibrations. Housings come in stainless steel or anodized aluminum, rated IP68 for submersion or direct burial. What gets less attention but matters on site: our sensors draw under 10mA, so they run for years on small batteries or solar panels. For networks with dozens of nodes, that cuts maintenance visits in half. We also supply them with titanium mounting studs if you’re dealing with high-corrosion environments. Beyond the hardware, we stock spare cables and junction boxes, and we can ship within two weeks on standard orders. Custom ranges, different connector types, or extended temperature compensation to -40°C are all things we handle regularly. You won’t be forced into a one-size-fits-all product. And if your project requires specific calibration certificates, we provide traceable documentation as standard.

FAQ

Common technical questions

How does a MEMS accelerometer differ from a piezoelectric one for structural monitoring?

Piezoelectric accelerometers are great for high-frequency vibration but often need external charge amplifiers and can’t measure static tilt. MEMS capacitive accelerometers can read down to DC, so they capture both vibration and very slow inclination changes. That makes them more versatile for geotechnical applications like landslide monitoring, where you care about both dynamic events and gradual movement.

Can I connect your MEMS accelerometers directly to a Campbell Scientific data logger?

Yes. Most of our models output a ±5V differential analog signal or RS-485 digital, both of which work with common loggers from Campbell, Geokon, or RST. We include wiring diagrams for the major logger brands, and our support team can walk you through the setup if needed.

What does Kingmach offer if I need a custom range or housing?

We modify our standard designs frequently. You might need a 0-5V output instead of ±5V, a narrower range like ±0.5g for sensitive tilt measurements, or a ruggedized connector that matches your existing cable inventory. Send us your requirements and we’ll quote within 3 business days. Minimum order quantities for customizations are usually around 10 units.

How do you validate the performance of each MEMS accelerometer before shipping?

Every sensor goes through a multi-point calibration on a shaker table, and we check frequency response up to 500Hz. Sensitivity, offset, and cross-axis error are all measured and recorded. You get a calibration sheet with your shipment—no extra charge.
